Bitter Sweet Symphony è una canzone dell’alternative rock band inglese The Verve, ed è la traccia principale del loro terzo album, “Urban Hymns”. Si basa su una  versione orchestrale di Andrew Loog Oldham del brano dei Rolling Stones “The Last Time” ed è stata coinvolta in controversie legali in relazione ad accuse di plagio: ora, anche se il testo della canzone è stato scritto dal cantante dei Verve Richard Ashcroft, il brano è stato accreditato a Keith Richards e Mick Jagger. Bitter Sweet Symphony è uscito il 16 giugno 1997 come primo singolo estratto dall’album, raggiungendo il numero due della UK Singles Chart. Il video musicale della canzone, a lungo in Heavy Rotation su MTV, si concentra su Ashcroft che canta il testo mentre cammina per una strada trafficata di Londra, ignaro di ciò che sta accadendo intorno e rifiutando di cambiare il passo o la direzione. Ai Brit Awards 1998, questa canzone è stata nominata come miglior singolo britannico, e ai 1998 MTV Video Music Awards è stata nominata per il video dell’anno, miglior video di una Band e miglior video alternativo. Nel 1999, la canzone è stata nominata per i Grammy Awards come Migliore Canzone Rock. Bitter Sweet Symphony is a song by English alternative rock band The Verve, and is the lead track on their third album, “Urban Hymns”. It is based on an Andrew Loog Oldham orchestral version of the Rolling Stones’ song “The Last Time” and involved some legal controversy surrounding plagiarism charges: now, although the song’s lyrics were written by Verve vocalist Richard Ashcroft, the song has been credited to Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. Bitter Sweet Symphony was released on 16 June 1997 as the first single from the album, reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart. The song’s music video, which received heavy rotation on MTV, focuses on  Ashcroft lip-synching the song while walking down a busy London street, oblivious to what is going on around and refusing to change his stride or direction throughout. At the 1998 Brit Awards, this song was nominated for best British Single, and at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards the song was nominated for Video of the Year, Best Group Video and Best Alternative Video. In 1999, the song was nominated for the Grammy Awards for Best Rock Song. Regarded as the band’s signature song and one of the defining tracks of the Britpop era, Bitter Sweet Symphony has featured in best ever song polls

Questa cover è contenuta nell’album “live on Mars” del cantante californiano. La versione originale fu pubblicata dai Verve il 1° settembre 1997  come secondo singolo estratto dal terzo album del gruppo, “Urban Hymns”, e raggiunse la prima posizione della classifica britannica dei singoli, miglior risultato per un singolo della band nel Regno Unito. La canzone fu scritta dal frontman Richard Ashcroft all’inizio del 1995 , quando faceva uso abituale di droga. Essendo stato lanciato sul mercato il giorno dopo la tragica scomparsa della Principessa Diana, il brano parve catturare l’umore triste della nazione e ciò ne amplificò il successo mondiale
