Gli Electronic sono stati un supergruppo formato dal cantante e chitarrista dei New Order Bernard Sumner e l’ex chitarrista degli Smiths Jonny Marr. Essi scrissero la maggior parte dei brani tra il 1989 e il 1998, collaborando con Neil Tennant e Chris Lowe dei Pet Shop Boys su tre tracce nei primi anni (compresa “Getting Away With It), e con l’ex membro dei Kraftwerk Karl Bartos in 9 canzoni nel 1995
Electronic was an alternative dance supergroup formed by New Order singer and guitarist Bernard Sumner and ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. Marian Evelyn (Marianne) Faithfull è una cantante e attrice britannica protagonista, insieme a Mick Jagger (di cui fu compagna), degli anni brillanti della Swinging London e autrice insieme ai membri dei Rolling Stones di successi indimenticabili come appunto questa “As Tears Go By”. Il brano è stato interpretato inizialmente dalla cantante nel 1964 e successivamente nel 1965 dagli stessi Stones. È stata una delle prime composizioni originali dei Rolling Stones, che fino ad allora avevano interpretato soprattutto cover. Johnny Marr è divenuto famoso negli anni ottanta come chitarrista degli Smiths, gruppo nell’ambito del quale ha creato insieme al cantante Morrissey uno stile musicale in grado di fare scuola. L’influenza di Marr sulla musica contemporanea è ancora forte, e ciò è testimoniato dal fatto che band come Oasis e Radiohead l’hanno citato più volte come punto di riferimento. Doug Martsch è il leader dei Built to Spill, notissima band indie rock americana, formatasi a Boise, Idaho, nel 1989. Il gruppo è noto per le sue chitarre e per il caratteristico timbro di voce del cantante. Reel around the fountain appartiene all’album omonimo della band inglese, “The Smiths”, pubblicato il 20 febbraio del 1984 dalla Rough Trade Records, che raggiunse la posizione numero 2 nella chart degli album più venduti in Inghilterra, rimanendo in classifica per 33 settimane.Nel 1990 la rivista “Rolling Stone” ha inserito l’album al numero 22 nella lista dei 100 più grandi album degli anni Ottanta.
Questo brano rappresenta uno dei primi grandi successi della carriera da solista dell’ex leader degli Smiths: è stato il secondo singolo tratto dall’album “Viva Hate”, pubblicato il 31 maggio 1988. Questa versione realizzata dai Pretenders di Chrissie Hynde (amica personale di Morrissey) è contenuta nella colonna sonora del film “A proposito di donne” (Boys on the side), diretto da Herbert Ross nel 1995
Questa chicca rappresenta l’anello di congiunzione tra Morrissey e Weller che a mio avviso rappresentano il vertice del pop-rock inglese degli ultimi trent’anni
Satellite of love è una delle canzoni più conosciute della carriera solistica del cantautore americano. È il suo secondo singolo dall’album “Transformer”, pubblicato nel 1972. La canzone è spesso considerata come scritta da Lou Reed, nonostante fosse già da tempo nel repertorio dei Velvet Underground. Il gruppo suonò la canzone ai concerti e la registrò durante la sessione del 1970 per il loro album “Loaded”, anche se, come molte altre canzoni registrate in quella sessione, non appare nell’album. L’esistenza della versione dei Velvet Underground di questa canzone è largamente sconosciuta e anche dimenticata dai membri stessi del gruppo fino alla pubblicazione del box set “Peel Slowly and See” nel 1995

The song is often regarded as written by Lou Reed, although it was some time in the repertory of the Velvet Underground. The band played the song at concerts and recorded it during the session of 1970 for their album “Loaded”, although, like many other songs recorded in that session, does not appear in the album. The existence of the Velvet Underground version of this song is also largely unknown and forgotten by the members of the band until the release of the box set “Peel Slowly and See” in 1995
Questo è uno dei pochi brani degli Smiths che si adatta ad una reinterpretazione da una band punk-rock come i Face to Face rimanendo molto fedele alla versione originale
Scott Weiland è stato il frontman della celebre rockband grunge Stone Temple Pilots per poi diventare negli anni duemila il cantante dei Velvet Revolver. Nel 2008 è di nuovo il vocalist degli Stone Temple Pilots dopo la loro reunion. Reel around the fountain è la prima traccia dell’omonimo disco d’esordio degli Smiths datato 1984
