Attribuita inizialmente a Dino Valente, Hey Joe è un brano blues i cui diritti d’autore furono rivendicati nel 1962 da Billy Roberts. Curiosamente, esistono vari master tapes su cui Roberts ha inciso il brano (il primo è da farsi risalire al 1961) ma fino ad ora non è stata pubblicata alcuna versione a suo nome. Il rilievo storico del brano è ad ogni modo da attribuirsi a questa cover che ne fece Hendrix nel suo album di esordio “Are You Experienced?” del 1967, brano che fu anche il primo singolo che precedette l’album. La canzone fu esclusa dalla pubblicazione europea (era normale in Inghilterra l’esclusione dei singoli usciti prima dell’album) ma fu aggiunta a quella americana.

Initially attributed to Dino Valente, Hey Joe is a blues song whose copyright was claimed in 1962 by Billy Roberts. Curiously, there are several master tapes on which Roberts has recorded the song (the first dates back to 1961) but until now there has been no published version in his name. The historical importance of the song is anyway due to this cover that made Hendrix in his debut album “Are You Experienced?” (1967), song that was also the first single that preceded the album. The song was excluded from the European release (it was normal in England the exclusion of singles released before the album), but it was added to the American one.
